West Marshall hosted the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference boys golf tournament in State Center May 4. Greene County finished second in the 18-hole event. Prairie City-Monroe was first with 334 strokes. The Rams and Nevada had 345, followed by West Marshall with 354, Roland-Story 360, South Hamilton 370 and Saydel 413.
Caden Jones of Nevada shot 75 for medalist honors with Andrew Mitchell of PCM the runner-up at 89.
“I am so proud of the boys and their play,” commended coach Heath Telleen. “We shot our season low score for 18 holes and Joe Carey, Kole Teeples, and Caden Telleen all shot career low 18-hole scores. Joe placed fourth and we hope to build on this momentum for Thursday’s tournament in Jewell. I know we have some lower scores in us.”
Carey shot 82, Teeples 85, Telleen and Jack Hansen 89 and non-counting scores from Sawyer Schiltz 96, and Nathan Behne 98.
Greene County traveled to Jewell May 6 for an 18-hole tournament hosted by South Hamilton. The Rams finished third among five schools. Roland-Story was first, followed by North Polk, the Rams, South Hamilton and Ogden.
Leading the way for the Rams was Carey with 87, placing fourth individually. Behne was eighth at 93, followed by Hansen 96, andTellee n 98. GC fired a team total of 374.
Cooper Carson of Ogden was medalist with 82, followed by North Polk’s Jack Peterson at 85.
Coach Telleen said the Rams fought through the wind and fast greens. The regular season is over and the Rams go to Atlantic for a Class 3A Sectional Tournament on Friday, May 14.
Greene County and ADM girls’ golf teams faced off at The Hill west of Grand Junction Monday, May 3, with the Tigers winning 198-280. Meet medalist was ADM’s Liv Rickert with 44, followed by teammate Emma Mellencamp at 49.
The Rams were led by Alex Miller having a nine-hole round of 59. Brianna Habben shot 67 with Josie Weaver 74 and Afton Funcke 79. It was mid-70’s with very strong north winds at the start. Ram coach Josh Carlson said the winds didn’t help, but the girls just had an off night.
Greene County placed sixth on May 5 at the Heart of Iowa Activities tournament. The 18-hole event was hosted by West Marshall at State Center. Roland-Story earned the conference title having 369 strokes. Nevada was second at 405, followed by South Hamilton 410, WM 411, Saydel 469, Greene County 486, and PCM 527.
Meet medalist and runner-up were both from R-S. Kaitlyn Rahfeldt shot 84 and Makenna Carlson was next at 88.
Miller tied for 14th place among 38 players with nine hole rounds of 56-48=104. Habben shot 61-52=113, and Funke went 68-64=132. Miller, Habben and Funke’s second nine scores were their best for the season. Kathryn Beaman shot 137 and Weaver 141.
Carlson added the girls played on an absolutely gorgeous day on a course that was in great condition. “I’m proud of the girls and the way they’ve improved in just a short amount of time. Only two of our girls had ever played golf before this season.”
